Bahr

Choreography by Mavin Khoo

Made in collaboration with British Council Malta for the EU Presidency (2017)

The Official Opening Ceremony of the 2017 Maltese EU Presidency is scheduled for the 11th January and will take place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. ‘BAHR’, a newly commissioned work for the Presidency, explores migration in all its forms, and its dialogue with movement, encounters, challenges and possibilities. It is about the very human experience at the core of this issue, which is so close to the heart of the 2017 Maltese EU Presidency. ‘BAHR’ will be performed by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of its principal conductor Brian Schembri, who will accompany national dance ensemble ŻfinMalta in Mavin Khoo’s interpretation of Albert Garzia’s original music score composed for the occasion.

As an immigrant myself, migration has always been a topic of interest, but this time I was forced to dig deeper and uncover different layers; it’s where I encountered the message of hope that determines each migrant’s journey.

Exhausting Space

Choreography by Iván Pérez Avilés

Re-staged for ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble, Malta premiere as part of Tnejn(2),

The Spanish choreographer Iván Pérez is well known for his poetic, clear dance style, which is stripped down to its bare essentials. He now employs this style to interpret the way we relate to each other in our complex world. Our world, where everything is connected, but boundaries can easily be transgressed. Presented as an adaptation of his previous work Attention, the doors are closing! created in Moscow, three dancers use every corner of the theatre surrounded by the audience. Tirelessly and affectionately, they exhaust perspectives of personal space and use their bodies in search for unity. Even though the boundary that separates intimacy from intimidation is fragile, the dancers push the limits anyway. Tenderly they discover new possibilities for human connectedness.

Tnejn(2) is a double bill framed by a strong mediterranean sensibility by two Spanish choreographers. Dutch choreographer Iván Pérez Avilés is one of the most exciting emerging international dance makers today. He also acts as Associate Choreographer to finMalta and the company is proud that he will be re-staging his highly acclaimed work ‘Exhausting Space’ as part of this evening (the work was originally commissioned by and premiered at the Korzo Theater in The Hague, 2015). Presented as an adaptation of his previous work ‘Attention, the doors are closing!’ created in Moscow, three dancers use every corner of the theatre surrounded by the audience. The programme concludes with a short work by Spanish – Malta based choreographer Lucía Piquero. ‘Petrichor’ was originally created on the 2015 – 2016 group of ZfinMalta apprentice dancers. The work was received with enthusiasm and will now be re-staged for the main company dancers of ŻfinMalta.

For 2017’s edition of ToiToi, ŻfinMalta presents ‘Ballon et l’Âme,’ a short contemporary work inspired by Beatrix Potter’s tale of Peter Rabbit.

ŻfinMalta’s Creative Resident Artist, Niels Plotard, choreographs Ballon et l’Âme, which will be performed by the apprentice dancers of the company.

The performance will be followed by a 30-minute workshop, during which students will be given the opportunity to explore movement using the ideas developed within the piece. Schools wil be supplied with a short resource pack to supplement this workshop.

À toi mon ballon
Comme mon père je cours après l'envol
Comme mon frère je brave les dangers
Comme ma mère je te protège, toi mon réservoir de souffle de vie
Une quête, un rêve, ... grandir
To my balloon
Like my father I flee to find flight
Like my brother I brave perils
Like my mother I protect thee, my vessel of life's breath
A quest, a dream,... growing up

RU(i)NS

Choreography by Athanasia Kanellopoulou

Premiered as part of Tlieta(3)

The piece ”RU(i)NS” of the Choreographer Athanasia Kanellopoulou in collaboration with ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble is a dance theatre piece which reflects fragments of our trembling, edgy world. Bodies in crisis, exiled, in search of the instant moment of their serenity. Moments of a shaken society that tries to resist and stay united. Bodies that are in search of the cell of their History, constructing the deconstruction. The landscape of a no-mans-land lies underneath us, within us.  How many borders and lines must we cross to reach home? How many stones must we carry to build a new life? How many circles must we create to find the buried History?

This is a work that explores the cyclic pattern of creation and destruction, construction and deconstruction, of life and death as determined by man and the history of the world. RU(i)N is a work that is defined by ones sense of home that energetically draws us within a community that ultimately (through power) disrupts and destroys.

“I must Create a System,
or be enslav’d by another Man’s.
I will not Reason and Compare;
my business is to Create.”

William Blake

Tlieta(3) is an evening of three works by female choreographers and composers. The evening is themed with the context of identity whereby the works collectively engage with notions of reflection, communication, construction, destruction and resistance. The role of the female choreographer against the tradition of male choreographers in dance is one of particular interest in contemporary discourse. A topic that has in some ways become a matter of urgency within the global dance industry, it highlights the ironically disproportionate visibility of women in dance when it comes to choreography.

ŻfinMalta will be presenting the works of the emerging choreographer Rachel Calleja, established dance maker Francesca Tranter and internationally acclaimed dance artist Athanasia Kanellopoulou. This trio of strong female voices will be reflected through their individual questions on identity, space, gender and their inherently Mediterranean sensibilities. The evening will also include sound scores by Jess Rymer (UK), Veronique Vella (Malta) and composer and sound designer Konstantina Polychronopoulou (Greece).

50,000 Thoughts

Choreography by Francesca Abela Tranter

Premiered as part of Tlieta(3)

A metaphorical dance inspired by whomever, or wherever we are born, we are all made of the same brain matter.  Fact, the average person has between 50,000 thoughts per day. With this amount of nonsensical inner traffic and congested lives, how open, available, can we be? It controls sensory integration, thought, voluntary movement, language, reasoning, perception, and memory. When we are not so full of thought, other parts of us surface, laughter, generosity, gratitude? When our awareness is not so crowded perhaps instead of anger there the steady flow of thinking a thick filter between our thoughts and feelings, constant mental traffic prevents us from seeing clearly, and listening, an incoherence in the train of thought that drives one mad, or is it that the thought just gets stuck there, and keeps presenting itself over again forever?

Je Tiens La Reine

Choreography by Mavin Khoo

Premiered as part of Malta International Arts Festival

WHAT HAPPENS TO A LAND AND ITS CREATURES WHEN THE PRIMAL ENERGIES THAT RUN THROUGH IT ARE SHAKEN AND SHIFTED? WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE HORROR OF OUR DREAMS BECOMES REALITY?

In Je Tiens La Reine, a band of fauns are seduced by the allure and sensuality of Calypso and her nymph sisters, drawn to the border where the earth meets the sea impulsively giving in to their darkest longings and desires. The fauns behave recklessly and their actions cause chaos and disruption as the nymphs, recognising their destructive nature, resist their hold and courageously attempt to protect their land and rituals of old. Intervening to restore order, the goddess Venus appears. Representing love, creation and prosperity, Venus’s divine power forces everyone, especially Calypso and the protagonist faun, to honour their destiny no matter what price there is to pay. Can the fauns redeem favour with Venus? Can peace be restored to this troubled land? Will Calypso return to the solitude of her cave unsatisfied or will she embrace her divine nature too? What, in the end, will be sacrificed in order to satisfy Venus? Like all tales of this kind, Je Tiens La Reine transports us to a magical place whilst reminding us of the journeys we take in our own lives.

In this contemporary adaptation of Mallarmé’s 1876 L’Après-midi d’un Faune and Debussy’s 1894 Prélude a L’Apès-midi d’un Faune, ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble tells the story of a faun’s encounter with the Ogygia-based Calypso. Like the sources that inspired it, Je Tiens La Reine assimilates the suggestiveness of the poetry and the music and is interwoven with rituals, quests and regressions that are represented through an intricate dance choreography by Mavin Khoo, accompanied by a resonant composition by Renzo Spiteri and a narrative adaptation by Giuliana Fenech.

Kick the Bucket

Choreography by Iván Pérez Avilés

Re-staged for ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble, Malta premiere as part of Erbgħa(4),

Is man conscious of his own existence? Are we strong and sensitive enough to get the most out of life? Kick The Bucket is a duet filled with extreme emotions, according to Iván with a more positive slant than the saying ‘kick the bucket’ would suggest. It’s not about dying per se, though perhaps one can only truly live when one, figuratively speaking, dies.

The pas de deux between Khoo and Corredor was extremely well-balanced and elegant to watch, despite the fact that it was ultimately portraying very extreme emotions

Anna-Marie Galea, The Sunday Times of Malta

Malta’s national contemporary dance company, ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble, will launch its first season with ERBGĦA(4) a premiere featuring four dances by four choreographers. The mixed bill will present distinctive works that demonstrate the versatility and diversity of the company within its Euro-Mediterranean context and sensibility. Newly commissioned works include ; ‘Selah’ by UK based Spanish choreographer Jose Agudo (new music by Vincenzo Lamagna), ‘Iż-Żmien’ by Maltese choreographer Francesca Tranter (music by Walter Micallef) and a company ensemble work by artistic director Mavin Khoo (performed to Stabat Mater by 18th century Maltese – Italian composer Girolamo Abos). The premiere concludes with a piece that is re-staged for the company, a duet, ‘Kick the Bucket’ by Dutch based Spanish choreographer Iván Pérez Avilés (music by Aaron Martin).

EvE

Choreography by Rachel Calleja

Premiered as part of Tlieta(3)

EvE  is an exploration of identity; how humans behave when they build an identity based on individuality as opposed to a collective identity. E V E presents four characters who seem to call themselves Adam, though it is never quite clear which one of them is Adam, if at all…
We see their whimsical characters unfold through their reactions to an incessant telephone call. Their story takes us on a musical journey, with laughs, craziness and a little bit of Adam for good measure.

I worked with the beautiful ladies of ZfinMalta, with whom I researched and learned about the many layers required to build a new physicality. I worked with Martina Buhagiar and Ruth Borg on the theatricality of it. It’s a multidisciplinary approach; it’s not just about dance; it’s about creating an alternative reality and then sharing it with the people who want to watch.

Qalbna

Choreography by Paolo Mangiola

Commissioned by Valletta2018 for V18 Opening ceremony

The company has a great privilege and consequently a great responsibility in stimulating Malta’s cultural development. As artistic director, along with the dancers and the whole team, I support a clear shared vision: to keep developing the space to cultivate a culture of contemporary dance in Malta. We are aware that opportunities like these are unique in enabling us to carry forward the message that with dance we can create value.

ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble, Malta’s national dance company, is warming up for its first big show this year, which has been specifically created for the celebrations marking the start of Valletta’s reign as European Capital of Culture.

Qalbna, being held at St George’s Square on January 20 at 7pm, with repeat performances every hour thereafter (last performance starts at 11pm), is a work choreographed and directed by Paolo Mangiola the new Artistic Director of ŻfinMalta. It takes inspiration from the natural evolution that happened over the centuries in Malta, a land where historically, populations, languages and customs crossed paths.

Observing the natural elements present on the island, the composition created evolves continuously, communicating, through choreography, the heart of our European values.

Qalbna is a word in the Maltese language which, literally translated, means our heart. I was interested to explore, metaphorically, how Malta and Valletta became our ‘cultural heart’ in this contemporary interconnected Europe.

Paolo Mangiola

This piece promises to be a spectacular work, in which the dancers interact with the stunning visual effects created by the Maltese Blaze Animation team. This creation pays tribute to the important role of Malta in this year of cultural events, and seals the presence of ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble at the front line of dance.

Paolo believes the creative contribution of Blaze Animation is fundamental to the realisation of this project:

“Blaze is a Maltese company working with different mediums. For Qalbna they created a visual environment through video projection, which will come alive on a large pyramid standing at 30m by 10m” Paolo said.

“The team’s contribution was essential and their work has added a beautiful and poetic layer, providing a further narrative to the piece, in which the dancers enter into a dialogue with, and react to the visual elements.

“The challenge for Qalbna was to ‘choreograph’ all these elements, together with the fantastic dancers of the company, while finding a way in which each layer has its own balance but is interdependent of one another.”
