Call for Apprentice Dancers

ŻfinMalta National Dance Company, under the artistic direction of Matthew William Robinson, is holding an audition for apprentice dancers of any gender identity, and who hold Maltese citizenship.

About the company

ŻfinMalta, under the leadership of the National Agency for the Performing Arts (NAPA) is a home for groundbreaking artistic collaborations that centre movement as a transformative force in our world, engaging a breadth of artistic voices from near and far to create visually striking, physically distinctive dance work, that captivates the imagination of audiences nationally and internationally. Embedded within the artistic ecology of the nation, ŻfinMalta strives to highlight Malta as a vibrant cultural centre within the European landscape of artistic practice.

TheNational Agency for the Performing Arts (NAPA)was established in 2023 with the distinct aim of raising the profile of performing arts in Malta, both locally and internationally. As the go-to agency for the performing arts, its aim is to have an active role in policymaking and advocacy for the performing arts as a discipline in all its facets – from backstage to onstage, from administration to performance and from development to legacy – through the creation of a sustainability strategy for itself and the sector it operates within, as well as synergies with other Public Cultural Organisations (PCOs) and the private sector.

ŻfinMalta’s current repertoire includes works by Paloma Muñoz, Matthew William Robinson, Diego Tortelli, Sita Ostheimer, KOR’SIA, and Liliana Barros. The company’s next season will include new creations by artists including Nicolas Coutsier, Andrea Peña, and Lali Ayguade. 

The company is made up of nine full-time dancers, and two apprentice dancers, hailing from Malta and across Europe. Behind the scenes is a highly skilled and passionate team of dance and arts professionals who bring to the company their expansive knowledge of the local and international contemporary art world. Combined, they make up a national, repertory dance company, fast gaining recognition on the European touring circuit. 

Job Description

Informed by the artistic direction of Matthew William Robinson, ŻfinMalta is seeking curious, versatile and passionate apprentice dancers, of Maltese residence, to learn from, experience and contribute to the National Dance Company and the varied methodologies of the choreographers we work with. 

 

Candidates should have a thirst for attaining a deeper physical understanding, further developing their technical practice and expanding their individual artistry, under the National Dance Company’s mentorship. 

 

The apprenticeship is being offered as a one year full-time, contract for service, commencing on August 31st 2026.

 

Apprentices will have the opportunity to work with local and international choreographers and may have the chance to perform alongside ŻfinMalta’s dancers in the company’s productions and performances. Apprentice dancers will be offered guidance by the Artistic Director, Rehearsal Directors and company dancers, who will be instrumental in their formation into professional dancers. 

 

During their time with ŻfinMalta, apprentices will receive training of the highest international standard, working within the context of a professional, repertory dance company. They will also develop essential workplace skills as professional artists, and receive support in developing their professional portfolios and audition practice. 

 

Apprentices will be expected to maximise this opportunity to work alongside the highly-skilled local and international company members. Upon completion of the apprenticeship they may be invited to audition to become a company dancer. 

Eligibility

Candidates must be over 18 years of age by September 2026, and must hold Maltese citizenship. 

 

Candidates must be able to demonstrate significant prior training in contemporary and classical dance.

Application Deadline: Wednesday 1st July 2026 at 5 PM CET.  

 

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by Friday 3rd July 2026 and invited to audition on Friday 10th July 2026, at ŻfinMalta studios in Valletta. 

 

The company does not hold online or private auditions.
