Moments when light peeks in a and out from behind clouds\, or shadows which sweep across a landscape before sunset. \nscores for fleeting sunlight is an invitation for conscious attuning and being-in relationship with celestial bodies and forces. It reminds us of the sun-god (Apollo\, Ra)\, and the ongoing rotation of the earth beneath our feet. The research brings attention to the continuous orbits\, circuits and spirals which build our universe\, and contextualises our human-ness within. And then: invites us to dance\, respond\, play\, resonate\, and make kin. \n\n\n\n\n  \n  \nAbout our Artist in Residence: Abigail Agius \n  \n\n\n\n\n“I am an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Malta. Working in visual media and performance-making\, I create research-based work driven by physical and emotional experiencing\, at the intersection of bodily knowledge and site-specific practice. \n  \nI engage with landscapes and phenomena such as sunlight\, seismic activity\, waves and heat to wonder about the visible and invisible\, permeable and impermeable membranes which divide one being from another. How do I understand\, and find ways to move beyond the skin which separates me from you\, from the earth? \n  \nIn my work\, the body is a central locus of experience and knowledge. I am interested in gestures which emerge from a phenomenology of the body\, working within a state of perpetual being\, doing and becoming — in response to environmental and emotional fluctuations. \n  \nIn my choreographic practice\, I look to re-encounter and meet the body at the place where the speed\, technology\, and demands of production and late-stage capitalism have left it behind. I dig into the archives of the body to find parts which remain hidden\, unacknowledged and forgotten. \n  \nta’ beżża’ l-art — my island-specific performance research — has been selected for Around a Process of Making\, a mentorship and residency programme for choreographic research on the volcanic island of Stromboli\, facilitated by Marosi Festival. Between September 2023 and June 2024\, I am carrying out this research under the mentorship of German Jaregui (Ultima Vez) and Antia Otero Diaz\, developing the work towards a sharing at the Marosi Festival in June 2024. \n  \nMy recent performance work includes [secret performance] (Juranyi Studios Budapest\, supported by School of Disobedience and SÍN Art Centre)\, Ma Muntajna (Hellbrunner Steintheater\, Salzburg)\, and il-Vjagg tar-Ragg (Teatru Salesjan\, Malta). I have exhibited visual work at IAM Contemporary\, Spazju Kreattiv\, MUŻA and Gabriel Caruana Foundation amongst others. I am one half of opensound.network\, a research group centred around creating collective listening experiences in open spaces\, in the form of sound performance-installations. \n  \nIn 2021\, I read for a degree in Comparative Literature at Goldsmiths University of London\, graduating with a thesis exploring possibilities for a posthuman body and sensibility in nature. \n  \nAfter following the work of the ŻfinMalta and as participating in other residencies\, I would like to initiate a new choreographic project — scores for fleeting sunlight — as part of the AiR programme\, developing it in collaboration with other talented artists. Her broad areas of specialism are modern and contemporary art. Eve holds a BA in Art History from the University of Malta as well as a Master of Letters in Art\, Politics\, Transgression and 20th C. Avant-Gardes from the University of Glasgow. She wrote her MLitt. thesis on the post- WWII collages of the British pop-artist Eduardo Paolozzi under the tutorship of acknowledged Dada expert\, Professor David Hopkins\, and conducted her thesis research in some of Scotland’s major art institutions including the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Hunterian Art Gallery. \n  \nOver the years\, Eve has tought art history and worked in museums and galleries including Koppe Astner contemporary art gallery\, which in 2014 gave her the privilege to participate in a world-renowned biennial festival of contemporary art: Glasgow International. \n  \nTowards the end of 2017\, Eve launched evecocks.com\, Malta’s first blog on local contemporary art. Today Eve works for the Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS)\, where she gets to work with world renowned artists and curators like Ugo Rondinone\, Pierre Huyghe\, Cristina Iglesias\, Michele Oka Doner\, Conrad Shawcross\, Hans Ulrich Obrist\, and Edith Devaney. Since 2022\, Eve has also been developing her practice as a performance artist\, participating in group exhibitions\, community-based projects and workshops related to movement\, dance\, performance and visual art. In 2023 she took part of Dance Festival Malta and was invited by theatre maker and actor Jacob Piccinino to perform at the Manuel Theatre for a stage play called Sofia as part of Teatru Malta’s Studio Ebejer Project. \n  \nAbout ŻfinMalta AiR2024 programme  \nThe National Dance Company’s AiR programme is now in its seventh season. Established in 2018\, the programme offers locally based dance makers a space for research and dialogue.  ŻfinMalta welcomes and presents the work of both experienced and emerging artists based in the Maltese Islands\, who are currently undertaking choreographic research\, to develop and explore their work further in a new context.  The ŻfinMalta programme aims to provide the time and space for focus on the creation and development of movement-based work. Beyond the presentation of our first AiR for 2024\, expect presented works and research by our next artist in residence\, Abigail Agius. We will then put these qualities and discoveries in practice through structured phrases and exercise\, accompanied by carefully selected\, mostly groovy music.”  \n  \n  \nAbout Zoe Camilleri  \n  \nMaltese- based freelance artist and dancer\, Zoe Camilleri\, started dancing at the age of 3 with the College of Dance. At the age of 18 she went into full- time training at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in London. After graduating she returned to her home island to join the first ensemble of dancers of ŻfinMalta\, first as an apprentice and for the next three years as a full-time dancer. Throughout her career she has performed extensively both locally and internationally\, working with choreographers such as Iván Pérez\, Athanasia Kanellopoulou\, Jose Agudo\, Mavin Khoo\, Francesca Tranter\, Lucia Piquero\, Paolo Mangiola amongst others. Her roles further include that of teacher\, movement director\, choreographer and rehearsal director. We will then put these qualities and discoveries in practice through structured phrases and exercise\, accompanied by carefully selected\, mostly groovy music.”  \n  \n  \nAbout Zoe Camilleri  \n  \nMaltese- based freelance artist and dancer\, Zoe Camilleri\, started dancing at the age of 3 with the College of Dance. At the age of 18 she went into full- time training at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in London. After graduating she returned to her home island to join the first ensemble of dancers of ŻfinMalta\, first as an apprentice and for the next three years as a full-time dancer. Throughout her career she has performed extensively both locally and internationally\, working with choreographers such as Iván Pérez\, Athanasia Kanellopoulou\, Jose Agudo\, Mavin Khoo\, Francesca Tranter\, Lucia Piquero\, Paolo Mangiola amongst others. Her roles further include that of teacher\, movement director\, choreographer and rehearsal director. Zoe started her professional dance journey with ŻfinMalta in 2014 as a full-time dancer. As a freelancer her roles range from dancer\, performer\, maker\, educator\, rehearsal and movement director and seamstress. She has been leading the Iżfen contemporary sessions since their start in 2021 and is excited to be back leading this growing and developing platform. \n\n\nIżfen is a space where people of any dance experience are welcome. During Zoe’s open sessions we move away from focusing on aesthetics and learning stylised movement and move more towards finding and investing in how each of our bodies like to move. His interest in understanding the gaze as a form of drawing – its perceptual\, physiological and cultural dimensions – were the focus of his practice-based PhD research at the Edinburgh College of Art\, University of Edinburgh\, funded by the Malta Arts Scholarship scheme.  Matthew is currently the solo artist representing the Malta Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale\, with the project ‘I WILL FOLLOW THE SHIP’\, commissioned by the Malta Arts Council and co-curated by Elyse Tonna and Sara Dolfi. \n  \nRaised in Malta\, in 2009 he moved to Venice and collaborated with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the USA Pavilion at the Biennale Arte 2009 and 2011. Later\, he came back to Malta where in 2018 he obtained his Masters by Research Degree from the Digital Arts Department of the University of Malta. He first exhibited his work in a double solo show organised in 2014 at Galleria Michela Rizzo in Venice. Since then\, he has exhibited in Venice\, Rome\, Valletta\, Genoa\, London\, Beijing and Los Angeles among other cities. Also\, in 2017 he was selected for the 3rd edition of the ‘Le Latitudini dell’Arte‘ Biennale\, at the Palazzo Ducale\, Genoa\, while in 2018 he was awarded the Under 30 Euromobil Prize at ArteFiera\, Bologna. \n  \nHe was selected three times to show in the context of ‘Ten Artists to Watch’ at LACDA (Los Angeles Centre for Digital Arts) and in 2019 he was invited to participate in ‘ArtissimaTelephone’ at the OGR spaces in Turin. Recently\, he was shortlisted for the Lumen Prize 2021. ‘Rajt ma rajtx… naf li rajt‘ is one of Matthew’s major solo shows\, curated by Elyse Tonna at Valletta Contemporary in 2021. In 2022 he was commissioned the work ‘Here’s How I Did Not See What You Wanted Me To See’ as part of the OPEN digital residency at Blitz\, Valletta.
