ŻfinMalta invites you to an open rehearsal with Sita Ostheimer, for a behind-the-scenes look into the creation of her brand new work, Mortal Heroes, premiering at Teatru Manoel on 23rd, 24th, and 25th May. Sita Ostheimer’s work is a journey in search of the ‘Other’, through her distinctive movement language and approach to sound and light. In Mortal Heroes she leads us on a journey of deep self-reflection and remembrance, of leaving and returning.

Just days before the premiere of ŻfinMalta’s highly anticipated new production ‘DECADE’, the company invites you behind the scenes to witness the performance coming together at Teatru Salesjan. Be among the first to see the incredible choreography of Thick and Tight, and see how we are transforming the theatre for this very special event – all for free. 

Whether you’re an avid dance lover or curious about the magic that happens behind the scenes, this is an experience not to be missed.

Our first open rehearsal of the year is with Simon Riccardi-Zani, who will be premiering ‘And the others, one day we played outside for the last time,’ as part of ŻfinDays 2025 in February. Following his previous works ‘Ones,’ and ‘Plus Ones,’ this work reflects on what’s left behind — people, dreams, and landscapes. What remains when we finally step out of our personal sanctuaries? How does the real world appear, and is there still room for exploration, play, dialogue?

‘And the others, one day we played outside for the last time’ is supported by Embassy of France in Malta.

ŻfinDays is an annual programme by ŻfinMalta that brings choreographers who are making their mark in the international dance scene to Malta. ŻfinDays 2025 features new works by Liliana Barros, Simon Riccardi-Zani, and the re-creation of ‘Somiglianza’ by Mattia Russo and Antonio de Rosa – Kor’sia.

Join us at ŻfinMalta studios for a behind-the-scenes rehearsal of Artistic Director Paolo Mangiola’s ‘Geographers of Solitude,’ featuring both the company dancers of ŻfinMalta National Dance Company and Ballet D’Jerri!

Twenty dancers come together to explore what unites the two islands through distinctive geographical and cultural landscapes. Taking inspiration from the Arctic Tern, a bird known for having the longest migratory patterns on the planet, ‘Geographers of Solitude’ is a conversation on diversity, the fragility of di”erent voices, and fostering collective harmony. Just as these birds take shelter on both islands during their long journey, the dancers on stage explore both itinerant and protracted island life and the dynamic interplay between solitude and communal, on our individual and collective narratives. It delves into the notion of islands as a microcosm of the world at large – a contained environment where its inhabitants develop unique cultures and ways of organising societies.

On the 3rd February, join us at ŻfinMalta studios for a behind-the-scenes rehearsal of ‘Aringa Rossa .10’ by Ambra Senatore. This Open Rehearsal is led by ŻfinMalta rehearsal director Brenda Lee Grech and features Vincent Blanc, assistant to choreographer Ambra Senatore.

‘Aringa Rossa’ was first created as a full-length work in 2014 and takes Senatore’s compositional style to the extreme, constantly shifting the pieces of an ever more astonishing puzzle. Underpinning all gestures is the everyday, observed with a magnifying glass, which she shifts and reverses until the gesture becomes fictionalised, until the dance becomes theatrical. Adept at surprises, cuts, and reminiscent of cinema, ŻfinMalta are now producing ‘Aringa Rossa .10’ as part of ŻfinDays 2024.

‘Cantata’ Open Rehearsal

On the 20th January, join us at ŻfinMalta studios for a behind-the-scenes rehearsal of ‘Cantata’ by the inimitable Mauro Bigonzetti.  This Open Rehearsal is led by ZfinMalta rehearsal director Brenda Lee Grech and features Vincenzo Capezzuto, assistant to choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti and former soloist of Aterballetto, Teatro San Carlo and Ballet Argentino.

‘Cantata’ forms part of our incredible ŻfinDays Double Bill which premieres this February, and is Bigonzetti’s personal quest to read and recover the traditional musical heritage of Southern Italy. The passionate and visceral gestures of the choreography are evocative of its wild, Mediterranean origins.
